There are two primary ways to get three phase power. First, it can produced by generators running on various fuels, from diesel to propane to coal and steam. Second, it can be generated by a phase converter running on three phase power.

While most three phase generators consume fuels that produce exhaust and are costly to operate, single to three phase rotary phase converters are efficient and run very clean. Because they run on electricity they do not produce exhaust as, for example, a diesel generator would. Often rotary phase converters are a far less costly method to set up and continue to operate when you need to produce three phase power. Fuel power generators are preferred where single phase power is not readily available and sometimes when the three phase power need is exceptionally large.
